Tips for Ensuring Your Pets Have a Safe New Year Celebration
For many, New Year’s Eve is the ultimate party of the year. But before you break out the champagne or don your festive attire, consider how your celebrations might impact your furry companions. Noisy festivities like fireworks can cause pets to feel scared and anxious, resulting in a rise in lost pets reported by animal shelters during this period.
Because we adore our pets, here are five essential tips to ensure they remain safe during the year-end festivities so that every family member can usher in the New Year happily and safely!
Keep pets indoors
If fireworks will light up the skies in your area, keeping pets outside is not advisable. Being outdoors can amplify their anxiety and increase the risk of them fleeing. It's best to keep them indoors, in a cozy, familiar setting with you nearby to offer comfort amidst the loud noises. Playing calming music can help soothe them by drowning out the booms. If housing them inside isn't feasible, ensure they're securely leashed, collared, tagged, and ideally, microchipped. This is wise not only during the holidays but as a daily practice.
Create a pet-friendly party space
When hosting parties at home, designate a specific area where your pets can stay away from the hustle and bustle. The noise and movement can be unsettling, and open doors may tempt pets to dash outside. By keeping them away from the crowded spaces, you're helping them feel safe and comfortable, and ensuring your guests' peace of mind as well.
Exercise is key
A well-exercised pet is more likely to be content and relaxed. Getting your pets plenty of exercise earlier in the day can make them more likely to rest through the nighttime celebrations. A tired pet can sometimes sleep through the festivities altogether.
Be cautious with party foods
Holiday indulgence is common, but it's important to note that party foods can pose serious risks to pets. Unfamiliar foods might upset their stomachs, and items like alcohol, chocolate, and certain nuts can be harmful or even lethal. Avoid giving pets the same food as your guests, and keep a watchful eye to ensure they're not sampling from unattended plates or snacks.
Consult your vet about anxiety remedies
If loud noises like fireworks stress your pet, mild sedation may be beneficial. Have a conversation with your veterinarian to determine if prescribing medication could help keep your pet calm and at ease during such high-anxiety moments.
